דותן השלים את לימודיו האקדמאים במדעי המחשב בגיל 19 ולאחר שירותו הצבאי עסק בפיתוח תוכנות והובלת פרויקטי טכנולוגיה בשירות המדינה. כיום הוא ממנף את הרקע הטכנולוגי שלו לייעוץ בסוגיות המשפטיות הייחודיות המתעוררות בעת פיתוח ושימוש במערכות מחשב ואינטרנט.
